Moving Checklist for Dehradun: 4 Weeks to Moving Day

How to use this list

Tick items as you go; the boxes work on screen and the page prints cleanly. Not everything applies to every home. A tenant moving across town has a shorter list than an owner moving to another state, so skip what does not fit.

Rules change. Procedures for electricity, water, gas and school transfers are set by those organisations, not by us, and they change from time to time. Treat the points below as a reminder of what to ask about, and check the current process with the office concerned.

Fix the date and the big decisions

4 weeks before

Plan the move

Fix the moving date. If you have a choice, steer clear of month-end and of the busy season (March to June, October to November), when slots fill up.
Book a free survey with two or three movers, in person or by video, and ask for itemised written quotes.
Give notice to your landlord in writing, and agree a date for the final inspection and the return of your security deposit.
If your children are changing school, ask the current school how to apply for the transfer certificate (TC) and what notice they need. Ask the new school what they need from you, and when.
If your employer is paying, check the reimbursement rules. Many ask for a mover with IBA approval and an invoice showing GST, and some want the quote signed off in advance.
Walk through the house and decide what you will sell, give away or throw out. Less to move means a smaller truck.

Utilities, gas and the society

3 weeks before

Sort out the connections

Electricity (UPCL): contact Uttarakhand Power Corporation about a final meter reading and bill. Owners may want the connection transferred to a buyer or closed, which can also involve the security deposit. Tenants should clear the last bill and keep the receipt for the landlord.
Water (Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan): clear pending water and sewer bills and keep the receipt. If you own the property, ask what is needed to close or transfer the connection.
LPG gas: tell your distributor. Within the same town the connection can usually be transferred; for another city you will normally surrender the cylinder and regulator and get a termination voucher. Keep that voucher safe; you need it for the new connection.
Society: ask the management about move-out permission or a no-dues letter, lift booking, loading hours and where the truck can stand. Ask the new society the same questions.
Arrange broadband and DTH: shift them or close them, and find out how to return the router and set-top box.

Start packing and gathering papers

2 weeks before

Get ahead

Confirm the date, time and address with your mover, and share any change in what is moving.
Start packing things you rarely use: books, winter clothes (or summer ones), the store room and the loft.
Make one folder for documents that travel with you: ID, property or lease papers, school records, medical files, vehicle papers and insurance policies.
If a car or bike is being transported, keep the RC, insurance copy and PUC ready. See the vehicle transport page for details.
If you are renting the new place, ask your landlord about tenant verification. In Uttarakhand this is done with the local police; your landlord will know the current process.
Use up the food in the freezer and the pantry rather than buying more.
Moving to a hill address such as Mussoorie or Landour? Tell the mover now so they can plan a smaller vehicle and a carrying crew.

Addresses, weather and the last packing

1 week before

Change your address and watch the weather

Update your address with the bank, insurance companies, employer, gas distributor and anyone who sends you post. Aadhaar can usually be updated online once you have proof of the new address.
Ask your local post office about redirecting mail if you are worried about missing letters.
Book an AC technician to take down split units before moving day, and one to refit them at the other end.
Monsoon moves (roughly July to September): keep plastic sheets and old towels handy, clear a dry room for cartons at both ends, and watch the forecast. On hill routes, check for road closures or landslide warnings before the day.
Winter moves to the hills: in December and January, cold, fog or snow can slow roads above Dehradun. Leave spare time in the plan.
Arrange for small children and pets to be looked after on the day, away from the carrying.

Appliances and the essentials bag

2–3 days before

Get the house ready

Switch off and empty the fridge the night before so it can defrost, then dry it.
Drain the washing machine, water purifier and geyser.
Disconnect the inverter battery, and fit the safety cap on the gas cylinder once you have finished cooking.
Pack an essentials bag for the first night: clothes, toiletries, medicines, chargers, bedsheets, a torch and some snacks.
Put jewellery, cash and important documents somewhere you will carry them yourself.
Tell neighbours and the guard when the truck is coming, and ask them to keep the space clear.

On the day

Moving day

Walk through, then let the crew work

Walk the crew lead through every room, including the loft, balcony and store room. Point out fragile items and anything that is not going.
Take a photo of the electricity and water meter readings before you leave.
Check the inventory list before the truck leaves, and keep your copy.
Do a last round of every cupboard, drawer and shelf, and hand over the keys as agreed with your landlord or buyer.
Keep your phone charged and stay reachable by the crew lead until the goods are delivered.

After the move

First week in the new home

Settle in

At delivery, check the goods against the inventory before signing, and write down any damage then and there.
Get the electricity and water connections put in your name, or confirm that the landlord has done it.
Book the gas connection at the new address using your transfer paperwork or termination voucher.
Complete the school admission with the TC and records.
Update the address on your vehicle registration and driving licence if you have moved state; the rules differ by state.
Break down the empty cartons, or ask the crew to take the packing waste away when they finish.

Checklist questions

How early should I book movers in Dehradun?

For a local shift, three to five days is usually enough. For an intercity move, seven to fourteen days. In peak season, March to June and October to November, give it two to three weeks.

What do I do about my LPG connection when I move?

Tell your gas distributor as early as you can. Moving within the same town usually means transferring the connection; moving to another city usually means surrendering the cylinder and regulator and getting a termination voucher to use for a new connection. Ask your distributor for the exact paperwork.

Do I need a NOC from my society to move out?

Many apartment societies ask for a move-out permission or no-dues letter and want the lift and loading time booked in advance. The rules differ from society to society, so ask the management office two to three weeks before your date.
